Economic Developments

'Manufacturing'

Present Scenario

  • In the year 1998, there were about 1.29 lakh industrial units in Delhi employing around 14.4 lakh workers.
  • Textile Products (Garments)Units constitute the largest number, followed by Repair, Services and Electrical Machinery

Critical Issues

  • Classification of Industries
  • Industrial concentration existing in residential and non conforming areas.
  • Development of new industrial area.
  • Environmental/Pollution control norms for existing and new industrial areas.

 

'Retail Trade & Commerce'

Present Scenario

  • In 1998, there were about 2.3 lakh retail enterprises employing 5.4 lakh workers engaged in trade, commerce and other services.
  • Large number of enterprises in sectors such as restaurants and hotels, finance and insurance, real estate and business operate from commercial centres indicating predominance of retail and allied activities in the economic structure of the city.

Critical Issues

  • Upgradation of metropolitian city centre as required for a global city.
  • Optimum utilisation of land along MRTS corridors .
  • Rationalisation of hierarchy of commercial areas in urban extensions .
  • Decentralization of wholesale activities from walled city .
  • Shifting of hazardous and bulky trade from special area.

'Wholesale Market'

 

Present Scenario

  • In 1998, there were about 37,000 wholesale enterprises with an employment of about 1.6 lakhs.
  • Some of the major commodities are textile & its products, auto parts & machinery, fruits & vegetables, hardware & building material, paper & stationery, food items.

 

'Government Offices '

Present Scenario :

  • Employment in govt. Offices is on decline Except in delhi government.

Critical Issues

  • Optimum utilisation of existing govt. Offices/land along the major transport corridors.
  • Judicious use of existing govt. Offices land for resource generation.
  • Shifting of public sector offices not serving the city directly.

'Informal Sector'

Present Scenario

Classification based on nature of activity and its operation:

Transport Cycle rickshaw pullers, labourers in retail and wholesale markets, maintenance of vehicles
Construction Labourers in new construction, self employed in repairs and maintenance of old buildings
Household Domestic servants
Services & Repairs Automobiles and other repairs, kabari, rag pickers
Trade Weekly markets, petty traders near work centers, residential areas, railway stations etc.

Critical Issues

  • Accepting the role of informal sector in economy and to incorporate in planned development.
